With the recent passing of legendary basketball coach Don Meyer, I got to reflect on the trait about coach that I personally admired most. I didn’t really know coach. I met him a time or two in passing and I followed his programs from afar, and over the years have amassed a large collection of his coaching notes that have been passed down to me. I do though feel very confident in saying that Coach Don Meyer was a leader, basketball fanatic, and what is a rapidly dying characteristic in coaching, a TRUE student of the game!
The NHL play-offs are off and running with hard hitting action almost every night of the week, and though they barely snuck into the post season festivities this year due to an injury plagued season I wanted to pay a little more homage to the Detroit Red Wings phenomenal steak of 23 consecutive play-off appearances!
The NBA Playoffs are here! The match-ups are set! Under the guidance of new commissioner Adam Silver, the season that began with 30 hopeful franchises has been trimmed to 16 teams with a chance to achieve the dream of being World Champions! The NBA, which was founded in 1946, has grown to be a global phenomenon and is host to the highest paid athletes (average salary) on the planet. With the 82 game regular season now complete, the league is ready to tip off its 8 first round play-off series’ which will eventually lead to the crowning of the 2014 World Champs who will have the honor of hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy.
March Madness is upon us! The greatest and most exciting month is sport’s is now rolling with conference tournaments in full swing across the nation! Almost nightly teams are punching their tickets to the Big Dance and filling a line on the all elusive 68 team bracket that initially began as a 8 team tournament back in 1939. Since then it has grown to epidemic proportions in terms of intrigue and excitement that it brings not only to our country, but also globally! However Championship week also has its fair share of disappointments as bubbles are busted and careers come to an end a little prematurely as upsets are commonplace in the final week prior to the actual NCAA Tournament.
Conference season is upon us and league races will be tipping off nation wide this week. The New Year has begun and every team in a sense gets to start fresh with a 0-0 record and in the hunt for a conference championship! The opportunity to represent your school and compete against your conference rivals week in and week out is a terrific challenge! The race to cutting down the nets will be fierce and intense in every league as coaches and players alike are in hopes of winning a championship ring! The roller coaster journey is a marathon rather than a sprint but those who perform the best will find themselves in the greatest spectacle in sports come March, the NCAA Tournament! Have fun and enjoy the ride as your favorite ball club tries to punch their ticket to March Madness!
If you are a basketball player or coach you undoubtedly have a unique relationship with the upcoming Holiday Season that is rapidly approaching! When most families think of Christmas and New Years as a time for parties, socials, dinners, gift exchanges and Christmas musicals or plays; those that are in a basketball family may have a little bit different view.
College basketball season is officially here! The first game day of the year always has a special feel for me as I have dedicated my life, up to this point, to the game of basketball. I have had the opportunity to coach in different systems under a diverse group or coaches and in several different parts of the country, but when that initial game on the schedule finally arrives it is always a very similar feeling.
Most if not all college basketball coaches refer to the season in 4 parts, the pre-season, non-conference schedule, conference, and the post season. In a perfect world, each part prepares you to do grow as a unit and be even better when the next segment of the season arrives. If this indeed takes place your team will find itself competing for a league championship in March and ultimately the post-season spectacle of the NCAA Tournament!
October is a beautiful month when basketballs are bouncing across the country as universities from coast to coast gear up for the upcoming college basketball season.
Even though I am brand new to the bayou, everybody here is as nice as can be and truly reaches out to make me feel like family! However I have found myself on the wrong side of the cheering section a couple times in the past few weeks. I would say that I am a very interested fan of football. I have always enjoyed watching great high school, college, or even professional games. There are many teams that I enjoy watching, however ever since I was a very young child the teams that I have claimed as “my teams” are the Miami Dolphins in the NFL and the Florida Gators at the collegiate level. I believe this is because I always liked teams the aired it out and threw the ball a lot and when I was young and that’s what both of these teams were known for. So, dating back to approximately the 2nd grade I have rolled with the Gators on Saturday and the Phins or Sundays!
