The NHL play-offs are off and running with hard hitting action almost every night of the week, and though they barely snuck into the post season festivities this year due to an injury plagued season I wanted to pay a little more homage to the Detroit Red Wings phenomenal steak of 23 consecutive play-off appearances!
The Detroit Red Wings current steak of 23 consecutive years participating in the play-offs is the longest current streak of any of the 4 major professional sports organizations. The closest such streak is owned by the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs who have made their post season for 17 straight years. Though the Red Wings do not own the longest such streak of all time in the NHL as that is held by the Boston Bruins who appeared 29 times in a row up until 1997 when their streak came to an end.
The Red Wings have been a pride of Detroit for a long time and have done a lot of winning over the years capped off by 11 Stanley Cups. The Wings have also won 19 Division Championships and have been home to some of the greatest hockey players of all time, so with such rich tradition its easy to see how the Pride of Detroit continues to appear in the post season year after year! Giving its fans something to cheer about in the post season for the 23rd consecutive year is just another testament as to why Detroit is often referred to by Hockeytown USA!
